The film is inspired by a news item from the seventies and a novel by Dido Sacchettoni on the same subject. Protagonists of the story are several thieves from the outer suburbs of Rome who work the richer districts of the city. Head of the gang is Remo Guerra, a hardened angry young man who holds down a job as cop alongside his burglary. The gang attacks its victims on the street and then forces them to go to their homes; a hard but effective technique. In a dizzying spiral of violence their actions follow each other. Remo is forced to fight out quarrels with the gang and also to see his own increasing personal crisis. He starts wearing disguise andeven considers plastic surgery, until he comes to the conclusion that he can no longer go on with his criminal activities. He can change his face, but not his conscience... Claudio Caligari: 'L'odore della notte is based on a true story that involved a wealth of inspiring symbolism. The film incorporates this material in an attempt to mix two essentials of cinematography - the realism of Lumire and the fantasy of Mlis - in order to comment on our era and the country we live in.'
