Through the great leap forward in computers and software, the technique of computer animation has gained massive momentum. The makers of Toy Story, the first animation film that was made entirely with digital techniques, now show in A Bug's Life how spectacularly the possibilities of the medium have grown. The closing titles report ironically that the film was shot entirely on location, but none of what is seen on screen ever existed outside the computer. The co-operation between Disney and John Lasseter's Pixar Animation Studios ensured that the 2D-world of cartoons was transformed into a world with amazing space and depth. The supporting creatures and organic backgrounds in particular have gained a lot in comparison with the classic cartoon film.A Bug's Life fits in this Digital New Wave programme because of the advanced digital technique used in its making, but in dramatic terms the film is still close to its classic predecessors. The makers have transformed the old Aesop fable about the grasshopper and the ants into a battle between sweet and diligent ants and villainous grasshoppers. Protagonist Flik is an outsider among the ants: he doesn't cling onto customs and traditions, but thinks up fantastic ruses and inventions. Unfortunately for Flik, his ideas do not always work out as planned.
