Lola runs... as fast as her legs can carry her, accompanied by a thundering techno-beat composed by director Tom Tykwer himself. Her aim is no less than to save the life of her boyfriend. This Manni earns his money by transporting money for a dubious client. One day something goes wrong: he loses sight of the bag with his boss's one hundred thousand German marks. When the loving Lola gets him on the phone, he has twenty minutes to get hold of the money. So Lola wil have to get the money. There is no time for mistakes. Every detail is important, every second and every choice counts. Protagonist Franka Potente is the epicentre of the film, not lastly because her hair dyed orange occasionally slyly distracts attention from events. The form of Tykwer's game with chance and choices is as fascinating as it is dynamic. He tells the same story three times and manages to exploit this construction to the full. With Die tdliche Maria, his dbut, Tykwer showed he already had a tight rein on his cinematography. His second, Winterschlfer, was also a display of supple and effectively used references to film history. Lola rennt, in turn, makes eager use of the codes of the action genre, but above all this film challenges the viewer to stand still and consider the enormous consequences of apparently minor events.
