This was really a very nice trip at the end of 1995. At that time peace negotiations between Jordan and Israel took place, resulting in some tensions between Syria and Jordan. At the same time, the Palestinians gained self autonomy in Jericho, Bethlehem and other cities in the occupied territories. Just when I was there, Bethlehem was handed over. And in Amman I met a lot of Iraqi's who still suffered from the consequences of the Gulf War and were on the run for Saddam. From touristic point of view Jordan, Syria and Jerusalem are extremely interesting. There is of course the famous rock city of Petra in Jordan. where I met this fantastic bedouin family during a tour with an old bedouin guide who I met during one of my more adventourous walks. The guy to the left with sunglasses is an old Australian man who with his wife gave me some company.
but also the mysterious old roman ruins of Palmyra in Syria are beatiful. On top of hill nearby the ruins is a castle from which you have this fantastic view
Wadi Rum, the old desert in Southern Jordan is really beautiful, look at the colors, it's real. I spent Christmas night here in a small tent.
And of course Jerusalem is really special. But this I may mention one day separately. Unfortunately I had no time to write a story during this trip, even while I was alone. But don't hesitate to mail me if you want to know more about these countries. |
