In this street you can find many pubs. It is one of the older streets in Rotterdam and it is at the beginning of a rather boring shopping area. The pub called Meliefbender (Dear I am here), is one of the most famous pubs in Rotterdam. And it is one of my first memories of Rotterdam, when I arrived there as a young student. Cafe Timmer celebrated in september 1996 the fact that it exists for 100 years. Many artists meet here, but it is closed early (22-23 h). Other nice pubs are Cafe Jan Linssen (57 years old, it once happened that clients walked away with the flush part of the toilet). and Sijf (former Pincoffs which was closed recently). Close to the oude Binnenweg, on the Westblaak is a popular Rythm & Blues cafe.
The Nieuwe Binnenweg is a very long street. Even for me it is impossible to visit all pubs. Not only because there are so many, but also because some of them are rather risky. The pub I most often visit is the Vagebond, because it is located not far from my popular cinema. One of the more risky pubs and dancing places is Tudor bar. Strange things happen overthere. The pub opposite to the right is Prima, which means all-right, but may be less right in the late hours. Many youngsters sitting there. And in one of the side streets you can find Dizzy, Rotterdam's best jazz pub. And a bit away from the corner on and with 's Gravendijkwal there is Sito 2000, completely renovated after the old disk-jockey died. A bit boring now nevertheless At the very end of the Nieuwe Binnenweg, you can cross the bridge and there you find yourself in the oldest part of Rotterdam, Delfshaven. Just on the corner, there are 4 nice pubs. Start in the Ooievaar with a ten year old genever. It is like the best cognac and doesn't taste like genever. They also have 15 en 20 year old genevers, but these are for specialists. Johan and Dennis can tell you more about it and inside is a nice exhibition. They close at ten in the evening, so next door is " Hiernaast " another pub. You can take your terras table from the Ooievaar when the whether is nice, because the owner is the same. With closing time around eleven (but I am not sure because of this genever) we have to move again. De Oude Sluis is most popular and closes around 2 am. Many students come here and with Kees behind the bar, you can be guaranteed of some straight penetrations in your being. When you still don't have enough (and why should you) you can still go to Koos, closing at four. Koos died last year and the owner is now Nick. The blond lady behind the bar (I forgot her name, which in het case is not most important) is doing a great job, serving all these drunk people without getting any trouble. All of these pubs are by the way more or less trouble free. The rest of Delfshaven is still to be explored. There is still a pub where customers get a free drink when they help cleaning at closing time. And they all do so. Besides pubs there are some great restaurants in Delfshaven.
This street was for years Rotterdam's most infamous street. Crime, sex and drugs were the characteristics of the place. But slowly things are improving and nowadays this street is really one of Rotterdams finest. The people are real and so are closing hours. At six it is still possible to have a meal at different places. Especially the Chinese restaurant on the corner serves great baked intestines. On the first floor you can gamble. Best pubs are Mondriaan (5-7 guilders for a diner, in the weekends you can find Wil behind the bar, till 6 am) and Zatkini. But the Lords club and the Schouw are also fine. And at the Popeliers pub they serve Hommel beer from the tap. Hommel is a very tasty Belgium beer from the small village with the same name on the Belgium/France border. This place is most popular. There are many pubs like Cambrinus, Bolwerk and Plan C full of young people, dancing and drinking. It is not the real Rotterdam, but offers many restaurants, nice views of the cubical houses, an old port and a discotheque with a view over the river.
